As a child, my grandmother always scared me when she said, "Today we're having false hare." I didn't want those endearing little creatures on my plate. Fortunately, it was actually a meatloaf filled with minced meat wrapped in puff pastry, with a hard-boiled egg in the middle. The false hare remains juicy thanks to its crispy pastry crust. And its cross-section is a feast for the eyes. The minced meat mixture also includes wild garlic, grated carrot, and pieces of bell pepper. This not only adds a lot of flavor but also makes it a colorful spring roast that is perfect not only for Easter.
instructions
mix egg and bread cubes
Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F) fan-forced. Mix the bread cubes with the milk and the egg in a bowl. You'll need a whole egg for four servings.
cut vegetables
Peel and grate the carrot using a vegetable grater. Cut the bell pepper into small cubes. Finely chop the spring onion.
mix meat and vegetables
Add all ingredients for the minced meat mixture and the spices to the bowl with the bread cubes, then mix everything quickly and thoroughly.
fill the puff pastry
Place the puff pastry sheet on a surface, spread half of the meat filling on it, layer with the boiled eggs, then cover the eggs with the remaining filling.
fold the puff pastry
Fold the puff pastry over, ensuring that the edges and seam are well sealed. Place the seam side down into the baking dish.
bake it
Bake the false hare in the oven on the lower rack for approximately sixty minutes. For one kilogram of minced meat mixture, you'll need about one hour of baking time. If the pastry browns too much, cover it with parchment paper and then a piece of aluminum foil.
